Despite the fact that nearly a quarter of America’s greenhouse gas emissions come from fossil fuel development on public lands, the Trump administration keeps pushing oil and gas leasing in Utah’s wild places. Not only does this threaten our climate, it also shatters the peace and quiet of our wilderness, damages sacred Native American ancestral sites, and degrades critical desert wildlife habitat.
SUWA has succeeded in blocking new oil and gas leasing in proposed wilderness by arguing that the Bureau of Land Management must take projected climate change impacts into account before issuing new leases. We have prevented more than 328,000 acres of Utah public lands from being leased to private oil and gas companies.
