Women Protecting Wilderness is a network of women from all walks and ways of life who share a common love for Utah’s wild landscapes and want to see them protected now and for the future. Our vision is to use our voices, our stories, and our diverse talents to celebrate our love of wild places and to call for their protection.
As a first step, we are creating a visually-exciting, attention-grabbing exhibit comprised of hundreds of photos and “testimonials” from women about why Utah’s wild land heritage is important to them. We plan to unveil this exhibit in October 2008 at a news event announcing the Women Protecting Wilderness campaign.
You are invited to help us create our “wilderness quilt” by submitting a personal testimonial about why wilderness matters to you. Here’s what to do. Provide us with:
-
Your name
-
A word or phrase that describes what you do in the world (private business owner, health professional, writer, mother, student, bicycle mechanic, artist, etc)
-
The city and state where you live
-
A photo of you alone or with family, friends, pets etc preferably in a wild place that you love.
-
And a 50 word or less statement about why wild places matter to you what they mean to you personally, why they are important to you, what’s at stake for you when you think about their future. The point here is to be eloquent, heart-felt, concise, poignantly honest. These are personal statements from the heart, powerful in their honesty, simplicity and eloquence.
We will integrate your personal “testimonial” into our exhibit. We are still in the process of creating its design. Some ideas include: a portable wall (or walls) with testimonials laid out like a patchwork quilt or mosaic; portable clotheslines with testimonials clipped with clothespins along each line; a portable slide show with images flashing on a screen; individual postcards that can be sent to community leaders.
Help us make women’s love for wild places visible! Submit your own testimonial! Send your picture, your name, the city/state you live in, a description of who you are and your 50 word (approximately) testimonial to deeda@suwa.org . We will format your testimonial and send the finished copy back to you for your approval - when we get your okay, we'll post it on our Woman Protecting Wilderness pages and use it for our "wilderness quit."

Some tips for writing your testimonial:
- Speak from your heart.
- Be honest, be simple, be yourself.
- Have a friend ask you: Why are wild places important to you? What’s at stake for you? And then ask them to jot down what you say.
- Write a poem.
- Go for a walk and let the words roll around within you and then rise up.
- Write as if you are talking to your child, mother, father.
- Think of it as a love letter.
